What is a SMT file?

Autodesk Shape Manager Text File

The ".SMT" file format, which stands for "Autodesk Shape Manager Text File," is a type of data file that is used with Autodesk software. Autodesk has products that can be used to manage, visualize, and analyze information about product design, especially in engineering and manufacturing.

To ease transfer of 3D models between products, Autodesk invented Autodesk Shape Manager (ASM) save files, which consists of both a textual and binary format. The SMT files contain the text based format. This file format can facilitate data exchange between CAD systems, making it possible to share feature data across different stages of the design, analysis, and manufacturing process.

How to open SMT files

Important: Different programs may use files with the SMT file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your SMT file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

Answer: Files which are given the .SMT extension are known as Text files, however other file types may also use this extension. If you are aware of any additional file formats that use the SMT extension, please let us know.

The best way to open an SMT file is to simply double-click it and let the default assoisated application open the file. If you are unable to open the file this way, it may be because you do not have the correct application associated with the extension to view or edit the SMT file.
